False alarm, thankfully
Aug 16th, 2007 by Oana
The other night, we had parked a little further down the block than we usually do. We were unloading things from the car and I did the last run by myself. As I locked the car and turned around, I noticed someone climbing into the basement window of the house 3 doors down from us. Since the lights were on upstairs, I wasn’t too sure what was going on, but then noticed a flashlight go on in their basement. I walked away a little faster and once back inside our house, told Ian about it. He convinced me to call 911 and report what I’d seen.
I was on the phone with the dispatcher for about 15 minutes and had to give a detailed report. The dispatcher asked me to stay inside the house but to keep an eye on the street outside – I couldn’t see much since it was almost midnight. The police showed up shortly, parked around the corner and then went to investigate. About a half hour later, the 2 VPD officers knocked on our door to let us know that it was a false alarm, but they were glad I’d called. Our neighbour was doing some renovation work in the basement, but he told the police he was happy to have such watchful neighbours.
I’ve seen this neighbour since, but haven’t acknowledged it was me who called 911! I’m afraid he’ll think I’m the new 80 year old nosy lady down the block!
