Back to Barcelona for the weekend
May 26th, 2007 by Oana
We drove back to Barcelona early Saturday morning, dropped off the car at Pepecar and met up with Jeff at the hostel.
We unsuccessfully tried to go back to Pinotxo for tapas – it was totally packed, so we ended up a few metres down at a restaurant in the corner of La Boqueria, where we paid almost 50 euros for 3 beers and 2 plates of patatas bravas. It was the only true rip-off we encountered in Barcelona, and kinda left a bad taste in our mouths.
We then took the funicular up to the top of Montjuïc and walked around the Castle, enjoying the views of the huge Barcelona port.
Just behind the castle we found a beer garden under some shady trees – the beer crawl was back on! Jeff came clean about his klutzy moment the day before, so he went back to the hostel to nurse his sore ankle while Ian and I checked out the Fundació Joan Miró.
Unfortunately the gallery did not allow cameras inside, so we didn’t get any photos of the very cool mercury fountain (yes, actually filled with mercury!) or of any of the crazy Miró art. There was a neat temporary exhibit by Claes Oldenburg and Coosje van Bruggen, two sculptors who focus on large scale public art installations.
Sunday’s highlight was the fantastic Parc Güell featuring GaudÃ’s work. There was an orchestra playing on the big platform for the benefit of a whole bunch of people dancing traditional Catalan dances in a circle. All the ladies wore matching dancing shoes, it was very cute!
