I’m back in Edinburgh after another night spent sleeping in an airport – this time Gatwick, in transit from Santorini and Athens. I had to get back so I’d have a couple of weeks to cram for my exams which ended up being scheduled quite early in the exam session. Ian is island-hopping in Greece for another 10 days or so.
We were in Santorini for 5 days, during the sinking cruise ship fiasco, but we stayed in a resort on the other side of the island from where the ship sank so information was slow to reach us and quite muddled. The Greek authorities maintained the ship was in no grave danger … until it actually sank! They failed to tow it far enough away from the rocks it crashed on, so its sinking has created an even bigger navigational hazard in the small port – not to mention the oil spill. My flight out of Santorini last night was packed and I overheard a few people who had been on the ship speak about their awful experience. I can’t imagine what they went through, and it’s good that most people are safe, but I hope there is some accountability for the disaster.
More photos and stories to come … Greece was truly fantastic.
