Pula, Istria, Croatia
Feb 23rd, 2007 by Oana
We started off our Croatia trip in Pula, arriving on a Ryanair flight from Dublin to find that there were no buses into town as promised. The information desk was less than helpful, seeming more concerned with the state of their manicures.
After overpaying for a taxi to the youth hostel, we dropped off our bags and took a moment to admire the views from our room and to make sure we were not too smelly after having spent the night at Dublin Airport.
We then went out in search of food and beer and sights. Beer was quickly found and downed on a sunny but chilly patio. We explored central Pula a bit, then found our bearings and walked about 10 minutes out of town to the Amphitheatre.
It was definitely the highlight of the sights in Pula (seen here in a panorama stitched together with AutoStitch). Admission cost us $9CAD total and we had the place to ourselves. It’s in fairly good shape and we had fun hopping over one of the walls, avoiding the ankle-deep pigeon poop and climbing up several rickety metal ladders to the top of one of the towers for a better view.
There is also an exhibit underneath the Amphitheatre, containing a display of amphorae (which for some reason look like giant boobs in Ian’s photo) and olive oil processing equipment and a bit of information about the Pula area (the Istrian peninsula).
