One of the things Ali requested that we include on our itinerary for his visit to Scotland was a soccer game. Pardon me, football … as everyone outside North America calls it.
The only tickets I could get at the last minute were some awful seats for the Celtics-Kilmarnock game on Jan 2nd in Glasgow. And I mean awful – we were in the absolutely last row at the top of the stands looking West, right into the sunset, and behind one of the huge support columns for the stadium canopy, which blocked our view of about 10% of the field.
The score was a foregone conclusion, since Celtic is at the top of the league with a 12 point lead over the next team, and Killie is somewhere near the bottom. Despite the cold weather, the limited view and the setting sun, I had an awesome time! It was so much better than watching a game on TV … you get to really feel the action, and all the other fans really got into it. Celtic is the Glasgow team, and Kilmarnock is from near Prestwick, about an hour south of Glasgow.
We were near the loud section, where cheers started up regularly, and almost directly opposite the Killie fans’ section which was zealously guarded by lots of police and stadium security. It was a remarkably clean game, but at one point, the Killie coach got red-carded and evicted from the field!
