Crime and vacations

We had dinner at Enigma tonight and had a chat with the very friendly owner about our upcoming trip to her home country, South Africa. Turns out the reason for their move to Vancouver was her husband getting shot in their restaurant in Durban. They had enough of the crime and as she put it, “ran”.
Her sister still lives there, despite having been tied up in her own house and robbed, and having her bracelets stolen from her wrist while sticking her hand out through the car window with change for a beggar.
Message we took away tonight: beautiful country, worth seeing, but don’t bring any valuables and always travel in groups and/or with a tour. A little scary.
